Road Trips and Attractions near Amarillo Airport

Amarillo downtown

Amarillo is in the process of revitalizing the downtown area, where you’ll find a mix of old and new buildings, both intriguing. Some historic buildings remain, such as the old Fisk Building from 1927, now one of Amarillo’s finest hotels, the Courtyard by Marriott. Other remains from a bygone era are

the neon signs, although many of the modern signs are LEDs, but are reminiscent of the neon age.
Many independent restaurants are opening in the city center, creating a new atmosphere and what seems to be the beginning of a more vibrant city center in Amarillo.

Cadillac Ranch

Address: I-40 Frontage Rd – Exit 62A

This is a surprisingly fun and free attraction at the west end of Amarillo, just off Interstate 40. The old Cadillacs, glued by the nose to the floor of a farmer’s field, are artistically planted in a row.

The tradition here is to take a can of spray paint and create your own graffiti on the cars. Don’t worry about bringing your own can, the half-full cans are scattered around the field surrounding the cars. Pick a couple of colors and get to work creating your artistic vision.

The cars are about 150 to 200 meters away from the parking area. The walk is along a wide, flat dirt road, which can be muddy and slippery after the rain. Near the always-open door, you can often find a souvenir seller, hawking colorful paint pieces taken from the cars, placed on key rings.

US Route 66 – Sixth Street Historic District

Drive your rental car on Route 66. This section of historic U.S. Route 66 is a step backward from the early days of road travel in the United States. Many original buildings with traditional signs line the street.

You can find restaurants with courtyards and exclusive shops, which give the area a fun atmosphere. For a quirky atmosphere and good local food, try Bracero’s, in an old garage converted into Route 66. At the end of the street is the Golden Light Cafe, an Amarillo institution that has been here since the 1940s. The area is well marked, and you can find a list of historic buildings on a street sign.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Visit with your rental car the second largest canyon in the United States, after the Grand Canyon, and is only 30 minutes south of Amarillo. Palo Duro Canyon is approximately 120 miles long, up to 20 miles wide in some areas, and 800 feet deep.

Palo Duro State Park is a popular area for hiking, camping, mountain biking, horseback riding, and geocaching. A 16-mile round trip takes you from the canyon rim to the canyon floor.

You can learn more about the history and geology of the area at the visitor center near the beginning of the park. Located on top of a hill overlooking the canyon, this place has some of the best views in the park.

Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum

Address: 2503 4th Avenue, Canyon, Texas

The largest history museum in Texas, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, offers an overview of Texas history from the time of the dinosaurs to modern times. Often described by locals as the Smithsonian with an accent, the museum has one of the best art collections in the Southwest. You can also learn about the American Indians who inhabited the land; the oil pioneers; geology; water as a resource; the innovations that shaped the region’s development, such as windmills and transportation; and much, much more. In addition to the outstanding permanent collection, the museum also regularly hosts special exhibitions. The museum is located about 15 minutes outside Amarillo.

American Horse Quarter Horse of Fame & Museum

Address: 1600 Quarter Horse Drive, Amarillo, Texas

This museum is a tribute to the horse that settled and shaped the American West and one of the most favored horses by cowboys in the Southwest.

The center focuses on the history of the Quarter Horse and the people behind it. On the lower level, the museum offers a variety of exhibits that address topics ranging from the biology of the Quarter Horse to horse racing. On the upper level, the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame offers a look at the most famous horses of this breed. Trophies, photographs, memorabilia and stories of these great horses are on display.

The museum building itself is an impressive piece of craftsmanship, where wood and stone create a sense of space and grandeur. Carved into the floor of The Grand Hall on the main level are the bloodlines of the Quarter Horses, which date back to the late 19th century when they were recognized as their own breed.

Amarillo Museum of Art

Address: 2200 South Van Buren, Amarillo, Texas

Located on the Amarillo College campus, the Amarillo Museum of Art is open to the public free of charge. While the museum houses an impressive collection of art from around the world, most of the artwork is from the Far East. Sculptures from the South and Southeast Asian region are on display, along with Buddhist and Hindu pieces from the 2nd century BC.

Also scattered throughout the 32,000-square-foot building are photographs by FSA photographer Russell Lee and his contemporaries, as well as 17th- to 19th-century paintings and paintings by early and mid-century American modernists.

Jack Sisemore Traveland RV Museum

Address: 4341 Canyon Drive, Amarillo, Texas

Another of Amarillo’s free attractions, the RV Museum features recreational vehicles from the 1930s to the 1970s, along with a variety of other antique vehicles and artifacts. Among the special vehicles, the first Itasca motor home and the oldest airstream, dating from 1935, stand out.

These vehicles provide a glimpse of the era from which they came, as many have not been changed since the day they were manufactured. The original appliances, furniture, and floors take you back in time.

The museum also has an impressive collection of old, shiny motorcycles in perfect condition, several antique cars with themed backgrounds, including an antique-style restaurant and a retro gas station. Miscellaneous items, such as old pedal bikes, cameras, and camping chairs, also contribute to the atmosphere.

Amarillo Zoo

Address: 2400 North Polk Street, Amarillo, Texas

For a pleasant afternoon and a glimpse of exotic wildlife, the Amarillo Zoo is the perfect place. Some of the most popular animals here include lions, tigers, wild cats, ringed lemurs, foxes, bears, kangaroos, and monkeys. And while these may be the stops on the show, you’ll also find irresistibly cute miniature horses and miniature donkeys, a Texas Longhorn, skunks and a host of other furry creatures. Perhaps less cute but equally interesting are spiders, amphibians and reptiles, including the huge Burmese pythons, along with a variety of other snakes, as well as turtles and salamanders in the Herpetarium.

Amarillo Botanical Garden

Address: 1400 Streit Drive, Amarillo, Texas

The Amarillo Botanical Gardens are easily identifiable by the impressive silver and diamond-shaped glass greenhouse that dominates the grounds. Spread over four acres, the gardens feature local flora outside, including a fragrance garden, while tropical plants are found inside the greenhouse. During the holiday season, the gardens are illuminated in a kaleidoscope of colors and are a fun place to visit after sunset. The Amarillo Botanical Gardens are located on the same street as the Don Harrington Discovery Center, and in between is the Medi-Park, which has a playground and splash deck.

Texas Air & Space Museum

Address: 10001 American Drive, Amarillo, Texas

A small but inspiring collection of aircraft and related pieces, along with a passionate and friendly staff of volunteers, make this an ideal stop for pilots or those with an interest in aviation. One of the best features of the Texas Air & Space Museum is that visitors can enter the aircraft for a complete hands-on experience. Located near the airport, the museum is presented in both indoor and outdoor spaces.
