The McCarran International Airport is a public and military airport in the Las Vegas valley, in the U.S state of Nevada. It is located in Paradise, 5 miles downtown South of Las Vegas. The airport covers about 2,800 acres of land and is owned by Clark County and operated by her department of aviation. The airport was named in honor of the late senator, Pat McCarran, who was a Democratic Party member and contributed immensely to the aviation sector both nationally, and locally in Las Vegas. He was a staunch anti-communist.
The McCarran International Airport was built in 1942 but started airline flights two years later in 1948. And ever since then, the airport has been expanding, employing innovative technologies like the common-use facilities, amongst others. There are two passenger terminals along with its four runways. There is also a cargo center (Marnell air cargo) to the east of the passenger terminal, as well as helicopter companies and fixed based operators to the west side. The airport handles non-stop flights to various cities in Asia, North America and Europe.
Las Vegas is globally known for one thing –fun. People practically take their work leave just to come over to Vegas. This is a desert city that doesn’t hold back on pleasure. There is the Strip, a famous Las Vegas resort lined street, sparkling with lights and glamor. There are numerous hotels which are attractions themselves. Many of them feature some free street sideshows including dancing, fountains, erupting volcanoes, and many more. There are unique museums here too, as well as a long list of shows you can’t miss when you’re in town.
There is the Grand Canyon (a helicopter ride away –which adds spice to your stay), there are the beautiful surrounding mountains, hills and the many recreational activities they bring.
The city of Vegas is one you can visit all year round. The hotel pools turn to an important part of your daily activities during the summer (when the temperatures rise to about 104F and above), and the winter temperatures are nothing but excellent for sightseeing.
