About the Airport
The John Wayne Airport is a general aviation and commercial airport serving Greater Los Angeles, Orange County, and California. It is located in the unincorporated area of Orange County and surrounded by several cities, including Costa Mesa, Irvine, and Newport Beach. It belongs to and is managed by Orange County. It was originally known as Orange County Airport, however, the Orange County Board of Trustees changed the name to the airport in 1979 as a tribute to actor John Wayne, who lived in Newport Beach and died in 1979. John Wayne’s statue was erected in 1982 at the airport terminal. It serves Orange County, Greater LA, and California.
