The colourful facades of the houses full of flowers in the summer season, or a walk along the riverbank, will be memories that are sure to remain when you return from your trip through this part of the west of Ireland.
Visit the Westport House, a large mansion that was built by a German architect in 1730, a good example of Georgian architecture, and has now become the main tourist attraction of the village.
During your visit, you will not only tour the halls and other rooms of the mansion but also go down to the basement to see some areas that belonged to the original castle, which shows a pirate atmosphere.
The mansion is surrounded by gardens with a lake that make up a very pleasant and cosy corner.
The Pirate’s Adventure Park, a family-oriented attraction, has been set up in a forest adjacent to Westport House.
Therefore, you will not be surprised to know that this mansion receives more than 140,000 visitors every year.
Castlebar
Castlebar serves as the county capital, being the largest city. It retains all the charm of the typical Irish towns, and it has excellent communications, both by train and by road, with towns such as Dublin, Ballina or Westport. In Castlebar, you must visit the National Museum of Country Life, which is one of the four centres that the National Museum of Ireland has.
Ballina
North Mayo and Ballina have a lot to offer. From golf, fishing, sightseeing, shopping or a night on the town. This northwestern region is dominated by the mighty Moy River which produces a large quantity of salmon per year.
Ballycroy National Park
This beautiful natural place is located in the area of the Nephin Mountains and is made up of about 117 square kilometres of fauna and flora. Today Ballycroy National Park is one of the largest peatlands in Europe and you can see bogs, cliffs and rivers here.
