Aberdeen, the granite city in the northeast of Scotland will surprise you. Many travellers who visit Scotland pass by and don’t even include this area in their trip. But we certainly loved it, the people we met were wonderful and the surroundings are worth a visit.

The best time to go, not only because of the weather, is in June and July. In these months Portsoy harbour is filled with classic boats during a festival called the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival.

If you like whisky you have to go in September when there is a Dufftown Whisky and Music Festival.

Aberdeen is a very prosperous Scottish town with a lot of history. Before it became an oil town it had a very important commercial and fishing port. Romans came here and the Vikings sacked it. They have manufactured paper, rope, textiles, wool, furs, in the 19th century it became the main centre for herring fishing.

Since 1970 it has been dedicated to the marine oil industry and is the city with the least unemployment in the country. Without a doubt, it is a city of enterprising people, who do not standstill.

The city of Aberdeen could be divided into four areas: the urban centre “Castlegate”, Old Aberdeen, the beach and the port. In each of these areas, we will have interesting things to visit.

Aberdeen at a glance

In Aberdeen town centre you have to walk along Union Street, which is the main street and where you can see Victorian granite buildings. Castlegate is the oldest area, here was the castle that Robert Bruce took from the English. The password was “Bon Accord”, today is the motto of the city.

Mercat Cross was where the old heart of the city was. Here they proclaimed themselves kings, you can see sculpted portraits of the Stuart monarchs. In 1715 James Stuart or Jacob Stuart was declared king “the Old Pretender” here, it is a very important place for the Jacobites.

Salvation Army Citadel, a few meters from Mercat Cross we find this granite mass that was designed as the castle of Balmoral. Here was formerly the castle of Aberdeen, which was destroyed in 1308. Today it is a Protestant church and an international charity.

Provost Skene’s House, in front of St. Nicholas Church we find the house of Sir George Skene, who was the “provost” of the town, he would become something like a mayor. This house was built in 1545 and has undergone several modifications. Today it is a museum of local history and can be visited free of charge.

St Nicholas Church. The official name is “Kirk of St Nicholas Uniting” although it is also known as “The Mither Kirk”. The first document that talks about the church is from 1157, although it has suffered many modifications throughout the centuries. For example, the granite spire dates from the 19th century.

St Mary’s Chapel. It has a rather sinister past. It was built in 1400 and in 1597 a metal ring was put on the wall to chain the alleged witches. 23 women and 1 man were held there before they were executed.

Aberdeen Maritime Museum. Here you will find a three-floor museum with the maritime history of the city of Aberdeen and about the oil industry. It is located on a replica of a North Sea oil platform. You can visit it for free.

Marischal College. It’s a historic Gothic building that was founded in 1593 and since 1860 merged with King’s College (founded in 1495) to create the University of Aberdeen. It currently houses Aberdeen’s Town Hall.

Old Aberdeen. Its name may lead to confusion, as it derives from a Gaelic word “Aulton” which means village by the river, but over the centuries in the 1600s it derived into Old Town. But let it be clear, the Castlegate area is the oldest in the city. Here you can see King’s College Chapel, Old Town House and St Machar’s Cathedral.
